Petite Girls Must Follow

Do you complain about your clothes not looking right because you’re vertically challenged? Maybe you’re wearing the wrong trends...
You’re short, and that’s great—but maybe you don’t want to appear that way. While actual growth is out of the question, you can change the way you appear by knowing what not to wear. Click through to find out which trends to avoid.

Tunic Tops
Tunic Tops
Don’t be offended, but these tops were not made for short women.

Round-Toe Heels
Round-Toe Heels
Sleek pointy-toe heels will do wonders for your legs.

Oversized Layering
Oversized Layering
While we worship at the temple of The Olsens, remember how they used to wear lots of layers and fabric circa 2005? Not our favorite look.

Shirt Dresses

Comfortable? Yes. Flattering? Not so much.

Oversized Bags
Oversized Bags
Don’t hide behind your bag. Opt for a smaller size that is proportionally correct for your frame.

Boxy Tops
Boxy Tops
This top does just that—makes you look boxy.

Silk Wide-Leg Trousers
Silk Wide-Leg Trousers
To give the illusion of height, try a wide-leg trouser in a structured fabric.

Horizontal Stripes
Horizontal Stripes
Flip those lines around! Instantly grow an inch or two by wearing vertical stripes.
Midi Skirts
Midi Skirts
Unfortunately, this hemline is just unflattering on short women. We suggest stocking up on knee-length skirts!

Bermuda Shorts
Bermuda Shorts
No way, ladies!

Mid-Calf Boots
Mid-Calf Boots
Do your legs a favor and swap your mid-calf styles for a pair of dainty ankle boots.

Tea-Length Dresses
Tea-Length Dresses
If you’re going to show some skin, go all out with a dress that hits above the knee. The in-between hemline of a tea-length dress isn’t ideal for petite frames.

Printed Jumpsuits
Printed Jumpsuits
To look a little taller, pick a jumpsuit in a solid color.

Ankle-Strap Heels

Ankle-Strap Heels
Ankle-strap heels visually divide your leg, making it look shorter. A shoe with a low-cut vamp does just the opposite, and who doesn’t want their gams to look as long and lean as possible?

Full Maxi Skirts
Full Maxi Skirts
Remember that Barbie cake topper on your sixth birthday? No one wants to recreate that look, or even worse—look like a bell!

Baggy Jeans
Baggy Jeans
Stick with a fitted or relaxed style jean to accentuate your petite size.

Guidelines to Look Taller for Short Girls

Being short doesn't mean missing out on being fashionable. A pair of stilettos isn't going to make up for confidence in your own sense of style. In principle these guidelines will work for anyone who is short in height, or for those who want to appear longer or leaner in their appearance. These guidelines also work well for those whose upper body is almost the same length as their lower body. In that case the aim is to make the lower body appear longer.

1. How to appear longer when you are short

dress short

Most short women will want to appear taller and leaner. This is relatively easy to achieve if you stick to the following guidelines:

a. Stick to monochrome outfits or outfits with few colour variations. You would look perfect in simple shift dresses, with little color accents here and there.
b. Dresses will look great on many short women, as they automatically created the much desired 2/3 – 1/3 look. If you opt for a tight, slim silhouette then this will make you look even taller
c. Getting clothes with the right fit and size is even more important for short women. Ill fitting clothes will add extra bulk.
d. An obvious way to gain height is to wear heel. However, don’t go overboard with these. Getting heels that are too high (say above 5 cm (..) will make you look out of proportion
e. Go easy on the oversized accessories as these may overwhelm you.
f. Often with petites, your legs will be relatively short. To make those appear longer you can wear the same colour belt as your pants or skirt.
g. Vertical patterns will always elongate and would be especially good for your pants or skirt. Horizontal stripes are best avoided.
h. Although a short dress can be very effective for short people when they are young, I would advise against them over 40. Instead opt for styles than fall just below or on top of the knee. A high waisted skirt or pants would make your legs appear longer.
i. Wear shoes that keep your heels free. Avoid straps around the ankle and instead opt for shoes that elongate.
j. Create nice vertical lines with open straight jacket and cardigans. A great look is to have a cardigan or jacket the same length as your dress.
k. Buttoned shirt dresses that stop just above or on top of the knee will create a nice vertical line as well.
l. Wear v-line tops to further elongate your look.
m. Avoid short trousers and pants that stop at the ankle. Best to wear pants with straight pipes or wide legged ones with heels, preferably high waisted.
n. Make sure that your tops stop at the hipline or above. Longer tops will make your legs appear even shorter.
o. Choose boots that stop just below the knee and avoid boots that end on the mid part of your shins.

2. Creating a flattering silhouette
dress short

a. Avoid wearing very contrasting tops. This will draw more attention to the fact that your upper body is almost the same length as your lower body.
b. A well fitted dress will give you a great silhouette.
c. High waisted pants with a short top will do the same.

3. Avoid boxyness

a. Don’t get (too many) accessories that are oversized and bold.
b. Fitted clothes are usually better for you and avoid oversized clothes (even i they are on trend).
c. The same goes for tops. Be care with very wide tops and make sure not to have both wide on top and below.
d. Go easy on the layering!
e. Best not to tuck in your pants into your boots.
f. Belts are best kept narrow, unless you belt it very high up your waist.

Pretty Dresses for Any Body Type

Everyone has figure flaws, but it doesn't mean you can't hide them! When shopping for a new dress this season, be sure to keep your body type in mind. By following these simple tips, you can accentuate the positive and downplay the areas of your body that... well, aren't so perfect.

Full Hips and Thighs
tutu dresses
For pear-shaped women with full hips and thighs, the dress should shouldn't be shorter than an inch or two above the knee. Select a dress with an A-line skirt but not something too full. A short, super fuller dress will look like a tu-tu.

To draw the attention away from your lower body, select a dress with a plunging V-neck, halter top or embellished neckline.

Thick Waist
If you are apple-shaped with a thick middle, you need to elongate the appearance of your torso and draw the attention away from your waist. Select a dress with an empire or drop waist to re-define your waist line.

Avoid thick belts cinched around your midsection and instead choose a chain or sash belt slung low on your hips.

Heavy Arms
bell sleeves dresses
Sleeveless and cap sleeve dresses aren't for you. Instead, select billowy, bell sleeves that are 3/4 or even full-length to hide flabby arms.

Small Bust
scoop neckline casual dresses
If you weren't endowed with ample breasts, avoid deep plunging necklines. Instead, select dresses with a scoop or bandeau neck and sequins or other adornments to add a little dimension up top. Layered necklaces are very popular right now and they can add some dimension and depth to your bust.

Big Bust
halter v neck casual short dresses
Dresses with halter tops and deep V's are very attractive for women who want to accentuate their big bust. Select fabrics that skim your body rather than bind, which can make your breasts look too big.

To draw some attention away from your bust and balance out a smaller lower body, choose a dress with an A-line skirt that falls one or two inches above your knees.

Plus Size
wrap dress
Don't pack on layers of baggy clothes to try to cover-up your body. Contrary to what you may believe, baggy dresses will just make you look bigger. Select fabrics that don't cling to your body, but drape nicely.

A wrap dress is particularly flattering to full-figured women. Don't avoid color and prints.

Too Thin
Bubble dresses
Sweater or knit dresses are terrific options for thin women. Add layers to your dress, such as a cardigan or fitted jacket to give you some bulk. If you have extremely thin legs, avoid mini-skirts and choose longer, flowing dresses instead.

Thin women can add a thick belt to give their waist more definition. Bubble dresses are very trendy right now and can also give the appearance of a larger lower body.
